The Lunchbox
Are you after some inspiration on how to pack a healthy school lunchbox that your child will love?
For a healthy lunchbox it is as simple as picking something from each food group on the Pick & Mix poster. To make it interesting for your child you can mix up what item you pick from each group. For example, it doesn’t always have to be a banana in the fruit group, you might choose strawberries, an apple or a pear! You might like to provide a sandwich one day, and some pasta or rice another day.
You can provide protein like chicken or salmon, lentil patties or falafels, boiled eggs, and even tofu. Some children thrive off knowing what to expect in their lunchbox and some children like to be surprised when they open their lunchbox each day.
Be guided by your child’s own needs when you pack their lunch. You might like to pack foods you know they’ll love and try just one new thing at a time so they are most comfortable to test out something different.
If you’re after more information you can check out the Healthy Eating Advisory Service website. The most important thing is to have fun with it! If you’re picking and mixing from five core food groups you can’t go wrong.
